My Top Ten OTPs
#10: Fox Mulder and Dana Scully
Fandom: “The X-Files,” TV show, 1993-2002Pairing Type: HetFandom Pairing Saturation: About as close to total as any pairing gets in a fandom. Origins: CanonOutcome: Consummated, unclear future prospects, could be called a HEA as they were still together at the end of the last bit of canon.
Isn’t this one sort of the OTP to end all OTPs? This pairing all but invented online shipping and some of the extant terminology that’s now standard. I was never involved in the X-Files fandom. I read some fic, sporadically, but by the time I got around to online fanfic there was so goddamned much Mulder/Scully fic that it was a little intimidating.
But oh. OH. Look me in the eye and tell me that at least half of your enjoyment of “The X-Files” wasn’t the delicious UST between the leads. It started early, and with a vengeance. It seemed each episode gave us a new hug, a new hand-clasp or off-color joke or moment of Soul Mate Connection to obsess over, because Mulder and Scully were indeed soulmates, as evidenced countless times in the show. I can only imagine what it was like in the fan forums at the time (of course in 1993 we’re talking USEnet groups and mailing lists, aren’t we?). Just imagine if this show were airing now. Tumblr would be All X-Files, All The Time.
How the ship was handled by its inventor is another story. Again, I can’t gauge overall fandom sentiment, but the few die-hard XF fans I know, and myself, agree that Chris Carter royally screwed us all. I guess he was afraid of writing an actual They Finally Get Together scene, so he just waited for awhile, then dropped the bomb on us that Mulder and Scully had already gotten together the previous season - had in fact conceived a child together - and HE JUST DIDN’T BOTHER SHOWING US. All we got was one scene of Scully getting ready in the morning, which then panned over to Mulder asleep in bed, but we were so used to being jerked around by the relationship that I don’t think anybody really believed that it was showing what it looked to be showing (spoiler: it was). So this was our reward for patiently waiting for, oh, six or so seasons. To be denied seeing the consummation of our ship. Then he drug it out further with the whole “who’s the father of Scully’s baby” drama when even Mulder acted like it was a big mystery when he knew damn well it was him the whole time.
And then Mulder left. For awhile. And when he came back for the series finale (an episode which was aggravating on many more levels than just the shipping aspect) it was made very clear that he and Scully were solidly together and in love and No Longer Half-Assing This Stuff. Great. Thanks, Chris.
I actually don’t recall if either of them ever said “I love you.” Not that it wasn’t clear. But those last three or four seasons are sort of a blur.
